Colophon: The Illustrations

The comic panels in The Acceleration Paradox were generated with OpenAI's gpt-image-2 (thinking: high, quality: high), directed through a locked style system: one style block, pasted verbatim into every prompt, so that seven independent generations read as panels from the same lost 1950s comic. Only the scene and the caption change per image. The caption lines were written by hand — the model letters them.

The style was chosen by contact-sheet probe: the same concept (the ladder) rendered in four candidate styles — newspaper editorial cartoon, architectural ink, manga screentone, vintage comic — judged side by side before committing.

The locked style block

Medium: vintage 1950s comic book panel in the Golden Age EC Comics
house style, bold ink outlines, Ben-Day dot texture for all colour
fills, hand-lettered typography.
Substrate: aged yellowed comic pulp paper toward cream (#f7f6f0),
paper grain visible.
Colour system: vintage four-colour process printing, all colours
semi-faded and slightly off-register as aged pulp printing: muted
process red for brickwork and machines of institution, dusty process
blue for the sky, sage green for the human figures' clothing, warm
cream paper ground, lamp black ink (#2c1810) linework — naturalistic
colour assignment but flat stylized fills through visible Ben-Day
dot patterns, no tertiary colours, no gradients.
Linework: bold confident outlines with ink spread at edges, thick on
figures, thin on detail.
Tonal approach: Ben-Day dot patterns and solid black shadow masses —
flat fills only, no smooth colour transitions.
Artifact layer: colour passes shifted a few pixels off-register,
crude press registration, visible dot pattern in all toned areas,
aged paper ground, slight ink fade in large colour fields.
Caption: a hand-lettered comic caption box in the corner of the
panel, cream field with black border, black hand-lettered capitals,
reading exactly: "[CAPTION TEXT]". Caption must be legible and
correctly spelled.
Composition defaults: dynamic diagonal action, dramatic upshot
angles, extreme foreshortening, figure cropped at panel edges for
energy.
Exclusions: no photorealism, no photorealistic skin, no 3D render,
no digital gradients, no smooth colour transitions, no modern
rendering conventions, no stock-photo aesthetic, no watermark, no
artist signature, no street signs, no digital gloss, flat
illustration only.

The scene prompts

Hero — Speed Without Direction

Caption: FASTER, HE CRIED! AND FASTER STILL! ...BUT THE WALL DOESN'T CARE HOW FAST YOU HIT IT.

Open road under a big dusty-blue sky. A vintage 1950s open-top motorcar races at full speed toward a solid red-brick wall filling the right edge of the frame, only a car-length away. The driver, in a sage-green driving coat, leans forward over the wheel grinning ear to ear, scarf streaming straight back. Exaggerated speed lines and dust clouds trail the car. One readable metaphor: maximum speed, wall dead ahead, driver thrilled. Composition: car in the left-centre third moving right, wall cropped at the right frame edge, low horizon, caption box upper-left.

The Promise — Dr. Speed’s 10X Tonic

Caption: STEP RIGHT UP! THE MIRACULOUS CURE TO A PROBLEM YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD!

A travelling-medicine-show wagon at dusk on a city street, ornately painted in muted red, its side panel dominated by hand-lettered ornamental capitals reading exactly "DR. SPEED’S 10X TONIC" with a smaller banner "CURES INADEQUACY!" beneath. A moustachioed barker in a top hat stands on the wagon step holding aloft a glowing bottle. Below, a small crowd of green-suited figures clutching laptops reaches up. One readable metaphor: the modern 10x pitch as a patent-medicine con.

Technical Debt — The Medal Ceremony

Caption: BUILT IN RECORD TIME! THE INSPECTOR WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LOOKED UNDERNEATH.

A grand new steel-and-brick bridge shown in side cutaway. On the deck: a medal ceremony — a beaming developer in a sage-green suit receives a shining medal from a portly official, brass band and bunting behind them, confetti falling. Below the deck, in the shadowed underside cutaway: the trusses are improvised bundles of tin cans lashed with rope, one rivet popping loose toward the river — and a lone inspector in green overalls stands among them holding a lantern and clipboard, mouth open in horror. Leaning against the truss beside him, a wooden site sign stencilled in block letters reading exactly: "CODE REVIEW". One readable metaphor: the celebrated build above, the terrifying underside only the reviewer sees.

Questioning Acceleration — Keep Calm

Caption: (no caption box — the poster is the text)

A weathered propaganda-style poster pasted slightly askew on a red-brick city wall, corners peeling, beneath a sliver of dusty blue sky. The poster: flat sage-green field in the exact layout of the British wartime KEEP CALM poster — a stylized crown centered at top, below it stacked hand-lettered capitals reading exactly: "KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON CODING". Around the poster, torn older bill fragments showing speeding cars and rockets. One readable metaphor: the calm counter-message pasted over the acceleration hysteria.

Quality over Quantity — The Slop Press

Caption: THE PRESSES RAN ALL NIGHT! A MILLION PAGES AN HOUR... AND NOT ONE WORTH READING.

A towering red industrial printing press fills the left two-thirds of the frame, rollers spinning, extruding a cascading flood of identical grey pages that pile in drifts across the floor toward the viewer. Lower-right, a small wooden desk under a warm lamp: a figure in a sage-green cardigan bends over a single ornate illuminated manuscript page, inkpen in hand. One readable metaphor: the flood of sameness versus the one made thing.

Don’t Pull the Ladder Up

Caption: IN THIS WORLD, THERE ARE NO ELEVATORS TO THE TOP — ONLY LADDERS. AND WHEN YOU'RE NOT LOOKING, THEY GET PULLED UP OUT OF REACH!

A city street at dawn beneath a tall red-brick office building rising to a flat rooftop. On the rooftop a single senior figure in shirtsleeves and tie hauls a long wooden ladder up hand over hand, the bottom rungs already high above the street; below on the pavement three younger figures in sage-green suits look up, one stretching an arm toward the departed last rung, a satchel at his feet. The ladder cuts a strong diagonal across the frame. One readable metaphor: the ladder being pulled up out of reach. Composition: worm’s-eye view from street level.

When the Builders Themselves Are Scared

Caption: THEY BUILT IT BIGGER EVERY DAY... EVEN AFTER THEY BEGAN TO FEAR ITS SIZE!

Night, a vast assembly yard under a dusty blue sky. A colossal humanoid machine of riveted plates towers into the frame, edges lost above the panel, its seams and eyes radiating sage-green light rendered as Ben-Day glow. In the foreground a group of engineers in green overalls stumble backward, arms raised against the light, faces lit from above. At the colossus’s base, one lone engineer still shovels coal into a red-glowing furnace hatch in its foot. One readable metaphor: fleeing the thing while feeding it.

Every prompt was assembled as: aspect-ratio line → scene block → locked style block → closing aspect-ratio restatement. gpt-image-2 exposes no seed parameter, so consistency lives entirely in the locked block — and keepers are saved immediately, because an exact regeneration is impossible.
